Step-by-step guide Step by step
How to make your first swap on Jupiter, step by step
Jupiter is a Solana swap app that looks across many exchanges for the best price. This guide takes you through a first swap with a small amount, one step at a time, and shows what to check before you approve.
In short
- Open Jupiter from a bookmark, connect your wallet, pick two tokens, read the quote and approve in your wallet.
- Jupiter's default Ultra mode chooses the route, the slippage and the priority fee for you.
- Its fee is 0% to 0.5% depending on the pair, and 0.02% from SOL to a stablecoin.
- Make a small swap first, and check the token you are buying before you approve.
Words you'll meet
- Swap
- Trading one token for another, straight from your wallet.
- Quote
- The price and amount Jupiter shows before you approve. It refreshes as the market moves.
- Route
- The path your trade takes through one or more pools to get the best price.
- Slippage
- How far the price may move before your swap is cancelled instead of completed.
- Verified check
- A check mark Jupiter shows next to tokens it has verified.
More words, explained plainly: the StonkBuilder Learn glossary ↗
Before you start, you need a Solana wallet with a little SOL in it: Your first week on Solana shows how to get one. A first swap should use a small amount, such as the price of a coffee.
The seven steps
Open Jupiter from a bookmark
Go to jup.ag/swap and check that the address bar reads jup.ag before you connect anything. Bookmark it, and use the bookmark from now on.
Connect your wallet
Press Connect and pick your wallet. Connecting only shares your public address: you still approve every action in your wallet.
Pick the two tokens
Choose what you sell on top and what you buy below. Look for the verified check next to the token you buy, and compare its contract address with the project's official site.
Enter a small amount
Type how much you want to sell. The quote shows what you get and refreshes every second.[1]
Read the quote
Open the rate summary to see the fee, the network fee and the route your trade will take.
Swap and approve
Press Swap. Your wallet shows what leaves and what arrives: approve only if it matches what you expected. The new token arrives in seconds.
Check the result
Look for the token in your wallet. If you want proof, open the transaction on an explorer such as Solscan and check that its status says it succeeded.
What a first swap costs
| Cost | How big | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Jupiter fee | 0.02% for SOL to a stablecoin | 0% to 0.5% depending on the pair[2] |
| Network fee | 0.000005 SOL | Paid to the Solana network[3] |
| Token deposit | About 0.002 SOL | Refundable, the first time your wallet holds the new token |
| Price impact | Small for SOL and USDC | Shown in the rate summary |
Ultra mode or Manual mode?
Jupiter's default, Ultra mode, picks the route, the slippage and the priority fee for you.[1] Manual mode lets you set slippage and priority fees yourself, and charges no Jupiter commission: you pay only network fees.[4] For a first swap, stay with Ultra.
If a swap fails
- The price moved. If the price moves past your slippage limit before the swap lands, it is cancelled instead of giving you a worse deal. Try again, or use a smaller amount.
- Not enough SOL. Every transaction needs a little SOL for fees. Keep some in your wallet.
- Your wallet asks for more than a swap. If it wants access to other tokens, reject it. StonkBuilder Learn explains token approvals ↗.
- Nothing arrived. Open your wallet's activity list, then the transaction on Solscan, and check its status before you try again.
Where to go next
Jupiter does more than swaps. Our Jupiter community has step-by-step tutorials for each product, including limit orders and recurring buys. You can also stake some SOL or learn how pools set your price.
Questions people ask
Do I need to create an account on Jupiter?
No. You connect your wallet and approve each swap in it.
Why is the amount I receive a little different from the quote?
Prices move between the quote and the moment your transaction lands. Your slippage limit caps how far they may move; beyond it, the swap is cancelled instead.
What does the verified check mean?
Jupiter marks tokens it has verified with a check. It helps you spot the right token, but it is not a guarantee: compare the contract address with the project's official site too.
Can I swap on my phone?
Yes, in your phone's browser with a mobile wallet, or in the Jupiter Mobile app. Swaps in the app follow their own fee schedule, so read the quote each time.
