PreStocks vs other ways to get pre-IPO exposure
PreStocks isn't the only way to bet on a private company. Here's how it stacks up against the older routes and the other token products, trade-off by trade-off.
The options at a glance
| Route | Minimum | What you hold | When you can sell | Who can use it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PreStocks | None: fractions of a token | A token with economic exposure only | Whenever there's on-chain liquidity | Eligible non-U.S. users |
| SPV deal | Often six or seven figures | An interest in the vehicle | Usually at an exit | Typically accredited or professional investors |
| Secondary marketplace | Deal by deal, often high | Shares or SPV units, after a transfer process | When a buyer is matched and the company allows it | Usually accredited investors |
| Equity crowdfunding | Small, but capped | Securities of the company or a vehicle | Often locked for a year | Varies by country |
| Tokenized public stock (e.g. xStocks) | None | A token tracking a listed share | Whenever there's liquidity | Eligible users, per issuer |
Minimums and lockups vary deal by deal; the PreStocks row comes from its FAQ and terms, the others from how those markets usually work.[1][2][3]
Rights: the biggest difference
In an SPV you own an interest in a legal vehicle that owns the shares, with the vehicle's documents behind you. A PreStocks holder has no ownership, voting, dividend or information rights, and no claim on the collateral.[1][2] What you get instead is liquidity: you can sell a PreStocks token at 3am on a Sunday, which an SPV investor usually can't do until the company exits.
Costs
SPVs often charge management fees and carried interest. PreStocks charges no annual management fee but has a token-level transfer fee — 3% on most tokens on 28 Sep 2026 — plus the usual trading costs.[1][4] Its terms also let it hold back part of the exposure from mintable supply to cover carry owed at the vehicle level.[2]
Liquidity and price discovery
Private shares change hands rarely, at negotiated prices. PreStocks and similar tokens create a continuous market, and they found real demand: an Allium Labs count published in August 2026 put PreStocks at $414.7 million, or 78%, of the $532.1 million traded in pre-IPO OpenAI and Anthropic tokens, with Ventuals' Hyperliquid markets taking most of the rest before they wound down in June.[5] The same count warned that on slow days volume across venues fell to about $100,000, enough for prices to drift from funding-round valuations.[5]
PreStocks and tokenized public stocks
Tokenized public stocks, such as the xStocks range on Solana, track shares that already trade on an exchange.[6] PreStocks comes earlier in a company's life: when a PreStocks company lists, its token converts into the equivalent tokenized public stock, as SpaceX PreStocks now do into SPCXx.[7] Read the SpaceX playbook.
Which fits whom
- If you want legal ownership, a PreStocks token isn't it; an SPV or a secondary purchase is, with minimums and lockups attached.
- If you want small, liquid, reversible exposure and you're eligible, PreStocks is built for that, at the cost of trusting the issuer and paying a fee on every move.
- If the company has already listed, a tokenized public stock or a brokerage account tracks it directly.
