Step-by-step guide Memecoins

How to sell a memecoin on Solana, and what it really costs

Selling a memecoin is the same swap as buying it, in reverse. What surprises people is the cost: fees on both sides, price impact in small pools and scams aimed at people trying to cash out. Here is the sale, step by step, with real numbers.

In short

  • You sell by swapping the memecoin back to SOL or USDC, from the same wallet.
  • Keep a little SOL: without it your wallet can't sign the sale.
  • Read the price impact. In a small pool, selling in parts can get you more.
  • On pump.fun, fees apply when you sell too. On $ARMORED a quick buy and sell costs about 8%.
  • Nobody needs a fee or your recovery phrase to unlock your coins. That is always a scam.

Words you'll meet

Swap
Trading one token for another, straight from your wallet.
Slippage
How far the price may move between your quote and your trade before it is cancelled.
Price impact
How much your own trade moves the price. Bigger in small pools.
Liquidity
The tokens waiting in a pool or curve to trade with you. More means steadier prices.

Before you sell

  • Check you have SOL. About 0.01 SOL covers the network fee. Solana fees are usually a fraction of a cent.[1]
  • Know what you'll receive. Pick SOL or USDC. USDC is designed to hold one dollar, SOL moves with the market.
  • Use the real site. Type jup.ag yourself, or use the project's official page. Never follow a "sell" or "claim" link from a DM.

Sell, step by step

  1. Open the swap and connect

On jup.ag, or the swap on the project's page, connect the wallet that holds the coin.

  2. Pick the coin and what you want back

Choose the memecoin as what you pay and SOL or USDC as what you receive. If the coin doesn't show, paste its contract address.[2]

  3. Type an amount and read the quote

Look at what you will receive, the minimum after slippage and the price impact. Fees are already in the price.

  4. Too much price impact? Sell in parts

If the impact is high, try a smaller amount and sell the rest later. Each sale also pays a network fee, so don't split too finely.

  5. Approve in your wallet

Check the amounts your wallet shows and approve. SOL or USDC arrives seconds later.

  6. Write it down

Note the date, the amount and what you received. In many countries a sale is a taxable event.

What a sale really costs

On a pump.fun coin still on its bonding curve, every sell pays the same fee as a buy: 1.25% for standard coins.[3] Coins with their own creator or holder fee cost more. $ARMORED pays 3% to its holders[4] plus 0.95% to pump.fun on each trade.

An illustration: $100 of USDC becomes about $95.60 of $ARMORED after fees, and about $91.80 after selling at the same price.
A quick round trip on $ARMORED, if the price doesn't move. Price impact and network fees are extra.

So before a memecoin is worth more than you paid, its price has to rise enough to cover the fees on both sides. On $ARMORED, that is about 9%: $100 needs to grow to about $109 to get $100 back.

When a sale fails

  • "Slippage exceeded". The price moved before your trade landed. Try again, or a smaller amount.
  • Not enough SOL. Add a little SOL for the network fee.
  • The coin can't be sold at all. If a token's freeze authority wasn't revoked, your coins can be frozen. Check this before you buy, with our memecoin checklist.

Questions people ask

How do I cash out a memecoin to my bank?

Swap it to USDC or SOL in your wallet, send that to an exchange licensed in your country, then sell and withdraw there. Send a small test first.

Why did I receive less than the quote?

The price moved before your trade landed, within the slippage you allowed. Larger sales in small pools move the price most.

Do pump.fun coins charge a fee when I sell?

Yes. Sells pay the same fee as buys: 1.25% on the bonding curve for standard coins, more on coins with their own creator or holder fee.

Someone says I must pay a fee to sell my tokens. Is that real?

No. That is a common scam. Never send money or your recovery phrase to unlock tokens.
