In short

  • Set up your own Solana wallet and write the recovery phrase on paper. Nobody else should ever see it.
  • Buy SOL or USDC on a licensed exchange, send a small test, then send the rest to your wallet.
  • Get the contract address from the project's own X or site, and compare every character.
  • Swap on Jupiter or pump.fun, read the fees and price impact, and start small.
  • Memecoins are speculation. Only use money you can afford to lose.

Words you'll meet

Memecoin
A token built around a joke, a picture or a story, rather than a product.
Wallet
An app that holds the keys to your crypto and lets you approve actions.
Recovery phrase
12 or 24 words that can restore your wallet. Whoever has them owns your funds.
Contract address
The unique address of a token. The reliable way to tell a real token from a copy.
Price impact
How much your own trade moves the price. Bigger in small pools.

More words, explained plainly: the StonkBuilder Learn glossary

Five steps to buy a memecoin: get SOL or USDC, send it to your wallet, verify the contract address, swap, then check the coin in your wallet.
The whole journey in five steps. Step 3 is the one people skip.

Part 1: get ready

  1. Learn five words

Wallet, recovery phrase, address, token and fee. StonkBuilder Learn explains recovery phrases in five minutes. Our first week on Solana plan covers the rest.

  2. Install a Solana wallet

Phantom, Solflare and Backpack are popular. Download from the official site or app store only: fake wallet apps are a common trap.[1] Write the recovery phrase on paper.

  3. Buy SOL or USDC

Use an exchange licensed in your country, or a card inside your wallet where that is offered.[2] Buy a little extra SOL for network fees.

  4. Send a small test

Withdraw a small amount to your wallet address on the Solana network, wait for it to arrive, then send the rest. StonkBuilder Learn walks through your first transfer .

Part 2: find the real coin

This is where most losses start. Search a popular coin's name and you will often find several tokens with the same name and picture. Only one is real.

  1. Get the contract address from the source

Copy it from the project's own X account or website. Never use an address from a DM, a reply or an ad.

  2. Run the checks

Paste the address into a block explorer. Mint and freeze authority should be revoked, and there should be no surprise transfer fee. Our eight-point memecoin checklist shows each check.

  3. Note the fees

Coins on pump.fun's bonding curve pay 1.25% per trade, and some coins add their own creator or holder fee.[3] Know the full cost before you buy.

A real coin and a copy with the same name and picture. Their addresses share the start and the end but differ in the middle.
Copies share the name and the picture, and often the first and last characters of the address.

Part 3: make the swap

  1. Open Jupiter or the project's page

Type jup.ag yourself, or use a swap on the project's official page. Connect your wallet: connecting only shares your public address.

  2. Paste the contract address

Pick what you pay with, such as SOL or USDC, then paste the address into the token search. Don't pick by name alone.[4]

  3. Read the quote

Check what you will receive, the minimum after slippage and the price impact. A high price impact means the pool is small for your trade size. Try a smaller amount.

  4. Approve in your wallet

Read what the wallet shows, then approve. The coin arrives in seconds. If you don't see it, search your wallet for the contract address.

Part 4: after you buy

  • Keep some SOL. You will need it to sell or move the coin later.
  • Plan your exit before you need it. Our guide to selling a memecoin shows what a sale costs.
  • Ignore DMs. Nobody legitimate messages you first about your coins, airdrops or "migrations". StonkBuilder Learn shows how to spot a crypto scam .
  • Keep records. In many countries, swaps are taxable events.

Practise on a real example

Our guide to buying Armored Kitten ($ARMORED) walks through one real coin, from the contract address to the fees on each hop. We built that coin's page for its creators, so we can show every screen. It is an example, not a recommendation.
