Tokenized stocks on Solana, explained simply: xStocks and PreStocks compared

Tokenized stocks let you follow a company's share price from a Solana wallet, around the clock. But the token is not the share. Here is what xStocks, which follow public companies, and PreStocks, which follow private ones, actually give you.

In short

  • A tokenized stock follows a company's price, but it is not the share: no votes, and usually no shareholder rights.
  • xStocks follow public stocks and ETFs one to one, backed by shares held with custodians, and reinvest dividends for you.
  • PreStocks follow private companies before they list, charge a transfer fee built into the token, and must be converted after an IPO.
  • Neither is available to U.S. persons, and each lists other countries it excludes.

Words you'll meet

Tokenized stock

What a tokenized stock is

A tokenized stock is a token whose price follows a company's shares. Somebody holds the real shares, or a claim on them, and issues tokens against them. You hold the token in your wallet, trade it at any hour, and can buy a fraction of one.

xStocks: public stocks and ETFs

xStocks are tokens that follow a stock or an ETF one to one, backed by the underlying shares held with regulated custodians.[1] Legally each one is a tracker certificate issued by Backed Assets (JE) Limited, not a share: you get the price, but no votes or company information.[2][3] Our xStocks guide has tutorials for buying, verifying and holding them.

  • Dividends are reinvested for you. The issuer buys more shares after withholding tax and raises the token's multiplier, so your balance grows instead of a cash payment.[4]
  • Trading can run around the clock on-chain. The issuer creates and redeems tokens only on the stock's market days: around the clock on weekdays for most U.S. xStocks, only during exchange hours for the rest.[1][5] At weekends and on market holidays prices come from traders alone and can drift. Our nights and weekends tutorial shows what to expect.
  • You can check the backing. A public proof of reserves compares the shares held with the tokens in circulation.[6]
  • What it costs. The issuer charges no management fee on stock xStocks today, though it may add up to 0.25% a year, and ETF xStocks pass on the fund's own costs.[7][8] Creating or redeeming tokens directly with the issuer can cost up to 0.50%, at least USD 100.[9] Most of what you pay is at the venue: its fee, its spread and the network. Our xStocks cost guide breaks it down.
  • Not for everyone. xStocks are not offered to U.S. persons and are unavailable in some other countries.[10]

PreStocks: private companies before they list

PreStocks are Solana tokens that follow private companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic.[11] PreStocks says the tokens give indirect economic exposure through holding entities, with no ownership, voting, dividend or information rights.[12]

  • A fee on every transfer. It is built into each token and was 3% on most PreStocks tokens in late September 2026. Our PreStocks guide shows how to read today's rate.
  • Deadlines after an IPO. When a company lists, its token has to be converted before a deadline: SpaceX went public in June 2026, and PreStocks set one for its token.[13] Our PreStocks guide explains what happens at an IPO.
  • Not for everyone. The terms exclude U.S. persons and a long list of other jurisdictions.[14]

How to buy one, step by step, if you are eligible

  1. Check that you are allowed to

Read the issuer's list of excluded countries first. If you are a U.S. person, these products are not for you.

  2. Get the official contract address

Copy it from the issuer's own site or our hubs, never from a chat or a search ad.

  3. Use a Solana wallet and a swap app

Jupiter lists many tokenized stocks.[15] Our Jupiter tutorial and xStocks tutorial show the steps.

  4. Check the fees

Look for a transfer fee on the token, the swap fee and the price impact.

  5. Start small

Prices can move away from the stock, especially at weekends and in small pools.

  6. Keep records

Taxes on tokenized stocks depend on where you live.

The risks in plain words

  • It is not the stock. You depend on the issuer, and on the legal promises behind the token.
  • Prices can drift. At weekends and on market holidays, when the issuer is not creating or redeeming xStocks, their prices come from traders alone.
  • The issuer holds powerful keys. Both issuers can freeze tokens, and rules and fees can change.
  • Access can change. Countries and platforms can be added to the excluded list.

Questions people ask

If I hold a Tesla xStock, do I own Tesla shares?

No. You hold a certificate that follows Tesla's price. The shares sit with the issuer's custodians to back the tokens.

Can Americans buy xStocks or PreStocks?

No. Both exclude U.S. persons, and each has its own list of other excluded countries.

Why did my xStocks balance change on its own?

A dividend or a stock split moved the token's multiplier. Your balance changes, and its value stays in line with the stock.

What happens to a PreStocks token when the company goes public?

PreStocks sets a conversion deadline. Holders who miss it can lose the token's value, so follow the official announcements.
